Hippeastrum Overview

From the breeding house to the flower show floor — what we have been growing, building and sharing.

Saint Yin Company is one of the earliest domestic organizations to collect and research Amaryllis varieties. Since the beginning of this century, it has collected over 300 native species and varieties of Amaryllis from countries such as the Netherlands, Australia, South Africa, Japan, and Israel. Currently, it has created over 8,000 new germplasms, with nearly 3 million self-bred varieties in mass production. In 2017, Saint Yin No. 1 Amaryllis (Rose Princess) and Saint Yin No. 2 Amaryllis (Wedding Bouquet) passed the on-site expert identification organized by the Guangdong Crop Variety Approval Committee, and respectively won the Gold and Silver Awards for exhibits at the 9th China Flower Expo. In 2018, Saint Yin No. 3, Saint Yin No. 4, and Saint Yin No. 5 were again approved by the Guangdong Crop Variety Approval Committee. In March 2019, they won the first, second, and third prizes for new and superior Amaryllis flowers at the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area • 2019 Shenzhen Flower Show”. In April 2019, at the 21st China International Horticulture Expo (Shanghai), a on-site cooperation was reached with a well-known Dutch enterprise, allowing Saint Yin Amaryllis to go abroad and represent China on the world stage. In May 2019, Saint Yin Amaryllis shone brilliantly at the “Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition”, with its fresh-cut flower exhibits winning the “2019 International Horticultural Exhibition Guangdong Indoor Exhibit Review”Grand Prize, Silver Award, and Bronze Award. All five varieties obtained the Guangdong Provincial New Crop Variety Certificate in 2018. Currently, it is the first enterprise in Guangdong Province engaged in the large-scale production of Amaryllis, and also the organization with the most new Amaryllis varieties in the country.

Five new varieties of Amaryllis pass the Guangdong Provincial New Crop Variety Identification

Sheng Yin Amaryllis possesses the nobility of peonies, the elegance of lilies, the brilliance of roses, and the subtle fragrance of jasmine. Its comprehensive evaluation and ornamental value make it the crown jewel of bulbous flowers.

The origin of the name Sheng Yin Lan
Sheng Yin Lan refers to a new variety of Amaryllis bred by Sheng Yin. During Sheng Yin's most difficult times, Zhou Shiming, the "Flower Fairy" of Dongguan, took over from the "Flower Enthusiast" Ye Yaohua and named it Sheng Yin Lan. This was not only a commemoration but also a source of inspiration.
Sheng Yin Company has bred Amaryllis varieties with long flowering periods, strong adaptability, excellent cold resistance, rich flower colors, and diverse forms. Their flowering period can be controlled, allowing for flexible management of blooming times based on market conditions. Sheng Yin Lan possesses the nobility of peonies, the elegance of lilies, the brilliance of roses, and the delicate fragrance of jasmine.

Saint Inne ▪Hippeastrum▪ How to make Amaryllis go dormant
Amaryllis will enter a natural dormant state in October when the weather turns cold; it will gradually stop growing if the temperature remains below 10°C for a long period. After dormancy, the bulbs should be dug up and stored in a cool, dry place. However, it will not enter dormancy in high temperatures, so forced dormancy can be achieved by stopping watering and fertilizing.
Precautions: Whether in natural or forced dormancy, do not remove its leaves. Wait until they turn completely withered and yellow, then prune them about 1-2 cm above the bulb. After pruning, it can be kept in the pot or repotted and placed in a cool area.

Hippeastrum▪ Care Tips for Hippeastrum
Hippeastrum is a relatively easy-to-grow bulb flower. When planting, choose plump, firm, and healthy bulbs; the larger the bulb, the better. The soil should be loose, fertile, well-drained, well-ventilated, and slightly acidic. Plant them in pots with a small portion of the bulb or corm exposed, provide ample sunlight, and control water and fertilizer in the later stages.

After the flowers fade, cut off the flower stalks promptly. The post-flowering stage mainly focuses on nourishing the bulb to allow it to fully absorb nutrients, enlarge, and produce new bulbs. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight in summer; it is better to keep them in a greenhouse or indoors away from direct light. The amount of water after flowering should be appropriately reduced, and water must not accumulate to prevent the bulb from rotting. A small amount of slow-release fertilizer can be applied to promote bulb enlargement and the sprouting of new bulbs.

Hippeastrum▪ Growth habits of Amaryllis
Amaryllis prefers a warm and humid climate, with an optimal growth temperature of 18–25°C. It dislikes extreme heat and intense sunlight, and should be cultivated in a greenhouse. During its winter dormancy period, it requires a cool and moist climate, preferably between 10–12°C, and must not drop below 5°C. It thrives in sandy soil rich in humus with good drainage.

If the soil moisture is high in winter and the temperature exceeds 25°C, vigorous stem and leaf growth will interfere with dormancy, directly affecting normal flowering the following year. Light also has a certain impact on the growth and flowering of Amaryllis; avoid long-term direct exposure to strong light in summer, while ensuring sufficient sunlight during winter cultivation. The soil should be loose and fertile, with a pH of 5.5–6.5, and waterlogging must be strictly avoided.
